XP Professional setup takes forever

I am installing a fresh copy of windows XP professional a
retail version. I started the setup in the morning at
aroung 7:30 am and now its 4pm and still the setup is
running showing 7mins remaining. But these 7min are not
actually the 7mins it is going to take. I wonder why this
is happening. Any solution will be of great help.
 
What kind of install on what kind of hardware are we talking about here?
Clean or upgrade? Hardware currently flashed and updated or older?
