XP Professional -- problem with workgroup, file sharing

S

Steve Pope

Perhaps someone can advise on the following:

I have one system running XP Home and one running XP Professional
on a network. No matter what I do, the XP Professional machine
does not appear under "View Workgroup" from either machine and is
not visible from the XP Home machine. The XP Home machine is
visible from either machine. I have gone through the home/office
network setup wizard, have set filesystm for sharing (oddly,
this takes several minutes before returning), have checked that
the "guest" accounts are on. "Simple Networking" is enabled
on the XP Pro machine, and I am using workgroups, not domains.

Is there anything obvious I could be doing wrong?

Thanks,

Steve

first of all it could be a number of things,
1. are the computers in the same workgroup to check click start, right
click on my computer and select properties, computer name tab, and at
the bottom click change and where it says workgroup make sure it says
the same on both computers, if not change it so that it is the same on
both computers.
2. make sure any third party firewalls are not blocking it
3. share a folder, open my documents right click, new, and click
folder, right click on the new folder and select sharing and
sercurity, and select share this folder on the network, click apply
and then ok.

try these and post back

That is Workgroup with no s on the tail, correct? If not and you are using two
different workgroup names, change it so they both are in the same named workgroup.
Make sure that both machines have their own unique name for the workgroup they will
share, that's the machines name for the network, not the workgoup name.

Also check Services to see if "Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS)"
is started, if not start it.
To open Services click Start > Run, type in: services.msc and press Enter or click
Ok.
If ICS is not started Right click on it and click Start in the popup menu.

Check your Firewall to make sure it's not blocking the other machine on the LAN.
If it is add the other machines IP to the Trusted zone in the firewalls
options/rules.

You mention the two machines being on a Network, yet you fail to mention how the
network is setup, how the machines connect and which components/protocols are
installed. I'll take it that you're not using a router and you are using a Direct
Connection which isn't as effective or secure as it would be using a NAT Router.

If it came down to it, you could Disable "Simple File Sharing" on the Pro machine
and set access permissions in the folder(s)/file(s) properties Sharing and Security
configuratin.
Is there anything obvious I could be doing wrong?

Thanks,

Steve
