XP Professional loops at bootup

My XP Pro SP1 suddenly started to loop at startup. After the first crash I get the choice of starting in safe mode but it still fails. There is no error message displayed that I can see. I have tried to set the disk as slave in a second PC to perform disk check and defragmentation - all without problems. I can then see all my files so the HD seems OK

I have started of the XP CD in repair mode and done FixMBR and FixBoot with no effect. Since I have a lot of SW installed to it I woul like to avoid reinsatlling everything again

How can I repair or trouble shoot my PC.

My PC is a HP XW4100 with XP Pro Sp1 with all the latest patches. I use Norton Internet security
