A machine that i use regularly which is running XP Pro is
prone to constant 'lock ups' or 'freezing'.

It can happen whether on the Net or not and is
independant of what applications are running. Leaving the
machine at the login prompt will cause this as well.

Everything is completely 'frozen' in that there is no
response to the mouse or keyboard the only solution is to
reboot and work until the symptoms reappear eventually.

Having once left the machine in the 'frozen state' to see
if anything would eventually change i returned a week
later to see it exactly as i left it....in fact this
message took three attempts to complete

Sounds like it could be a heat problem. Make sure you have a working, power
supply fan, processor fan with heat sink(mounted to the processer), and at
least one case fan, but the more the better. Keep the side of the case off
or cracked open if it helps. Add fans anywhere you can and then see how it
runs. If it doesn't help then I would suspect some faulty hardware.

Sounds like bad hardware. AMD chip running Windows
instead of Linux, memory stick going bad, motherboard
dying, it could be anything. Easiest test would be to
backup everything, format, and reinstall. If it continues
after that, I'd look at my hardware.
