Thanks Gents: I have tried your common recovery things
and can't get my system to fire up!,after crashing.
My XP tries to start and during the course of trying the
one line highlited warning appears"Trend Chip away virus
(r)on guard version 1-64) Then things go to a black
screen with only the mouse arrow displayed...Any ideas?
Would really appreciate any help ..I can get safe mode
screen but have tried all options without any
result..Thanks..Paul

I would use MSConfig to t-shoot what startup program or service is
causing the problem. Here is article that covers this.

It may be a problem with the Tread Chip AV.
