xp prof.. gone down

Please whatever you can suggest!! I switched on my
computer yesterday (I'm using XP Professional)the screen
came on with the chase bar,flashed a couple of times and
went to a black screen with just the mouse arrow
showing.I cannot get it to do anything,it seems to keep
tryng to fire up windows but keeps failing.I am a novice
and do not know how to open up in safe mode or how to do
anything to correct this problem..Thanks for anything you
can advise...Paul
