XP Product Key

I done some work for a guy and afterward he could not pay me so I asked for
his laptop as payment. I now have the laptop but it appears that the windows
OS on it was pirated. I have an old PC that I have shelved that had a legite
windows copy on it. Is there a way to use my legit key on my laptop WITHOUT
re-installing? It seems like you should be able to enter in a new key
somewhere.

The only problem is that you have to install LIKE keys. If this is a laptop
then it probably has an OEM version installed and a Vol or Retail key will
not work. Also if this laptop was installed with OEM release and your key
is SP1 or SP2 it will not work because the versions are not interchangeable.
Finally, if your shelved copy is OEM it is illegal to move it to to the
laptop.

This will tell you how to change the key.

Does anyone know of any way to enter valid keys of one type (OEM, Vol, or
Retail) over an image created on another type?

I am a reseller that does work for a number of K-12 institutions. We have
created a drive image for one of the schools that includes their multitude of
site-licensed educational software applications. This school recently
received over 100 donated PCs, each with valid OEM Windows XP Pro licenses.
We would like to reload these donated PCs with our existing image (to save
the 20+ hours to load Windows XP Pro from scratch and re-install all the
educational software), and be able to enter their valid OEM Windows XP Pro
key to stay legit.

Please reply as soon as possible as this project is looming - school starts
August 14th! If we can't load from our image and update to the OEM keys, we
will have to live at the school from now until then in order to complete the
task!

No. Your image must be of the same SKU version as the Product Key.

I was afraid of that. I wish that rule would change, however; we will work
to stay legit, but to do so must incur a lot of extra expense (money for our
clients, time for us).
