XP Processes/Services

1. Where can I find a list of the basic/default
processes/services XP should have running (shown under
task manager / admin services) along with the XP default
Automatic or Manual settings etc.

I know it depends on if you are on a network
and other situations of course. I am on a home
network with file sharing on. Have DSL and a
Lynksys router so we can all use the DSL etc.

Better yet, is there a way to find out which service
should be auto or manual? I tried setting all to manual
to see which ones eventaully started themselves
and which ones stayed off etc.

Anyway a good new XP install should take care of it
for me IF I can get a brand new install with XP
not picking up some of my previous settings.
Yes, I do a full format before installing but
XP still picks up some previous settings.
When XP formats it sure doesn't erase the hard drive
I know that for sure.
Anyway thanks

black viper's guide is the most famous one on the net:

it's what i use to streamline my system.

about reformats, you're right. reformats don't erase all
the data, which is why data can still be recovered even
after a reformat. to truly erase data, you'll need to do
something more, like write ones and zeroes several times.

If you boot from the Windows XP CD, and opt to format your install partition
during the procedure, THERE IS NO POSSIBLE WAY that you will have any left
over settings, unless you are installing a 2nd instance of Windows XP to a
different partition.

What are you doing different/wrong?

Try these - I've just downloaded them and they look like
they have potential:

- Process Explorer from Sysinternals.com
- An open handle tool called oh.exe from microsoft to
find out what has a hold on various programs
