I have I home computer, 3.3 gig 1 gig ram, on DSL with wireless router.
What services can I turn off to speed up things and smooth out the
operations.? What do I need on? Any place to get a list of what should be
on, off manual, etc.?thanks,

JIm

Jim,

Never seen a list of services needed, but not saying they don't exist

Services like Task Scheduler, Remote Registry, Messenger, Indexing, Fax (set
to manual by default) to name a few are safe to stop then disable

Note that turning Microsoft services off does not "speed up things".
This is especially true since you run WinXP on today's hardware.
What do I need on?

That depends on your needs in particular.

See above. There is a list of WinXP's default startup type settings,
however that's not what you're looking for. Note also that there are
third-party services being installed with third-party software. Nobody
can see your system from afar. In case of doubt, leave these settings
alone.

Jim,

For startup you can use a program called Autorun:

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/utilities/autoruns.mspx

Click the LOGON tab

If there are things like Messengers (not MSN) then you can delete them
Also delete Real Media Updater, Adobe Speedlauncher, Quicktime Task,
Microsoft Office OSA.exe etc, but do not delete anything like your virus
software or firewall because you'll be unprotected if you do. Maybe it would
be better to untick those entries, restart the computer & then if all is ok
then use the autorun application to delete those entries

You can also look in your startup folder (START | All Programs | Startup).
If there is something in there that needs deleting then right-click the
START button | Explore or Open then navigate to the startup folder & delete
the links there.

If you have MSN running on startup then you will need to open MSN/Live
Messenger | Tools | Options (General or Preferences tab) & remove the tick
from Automatically run this application when I log onto Windows. Click
APPLY, click OK & then right-click the system tray icon to exit the
application

You have to do MSN the above way as when it exits it replaces the link for
startup.

Hope this also helps,
