XP problem ?

Hi,

My IBM laptop 600E intermittently stops booting with XP.

It rather takes me to the "Error" window, which shows up
immediately after the "RAM" calculation gets done.
The error window shows the error# to be 08611.

When the laptop does get safely booted, the in-built
mouse doesn't work, however the external mouse does.

Does anyone have any suggestion as how to narrow down the
problem ?

Is it a hardware problem or XP problem ?
