i purchased xp pro about 8 months ago and now my
processor and motherboard are about to go. i have heard
so much like you can only change certain things, and this
is the second processor on my motherbard that i have
used. My question is if i get a brand new motherboard and
processor keeping everything else the same will i be able
to use xp pro that i bought on my computer.
thank you

If your xp is a retail version, then no prob. At activation time at worst
you'll have to call MS and tell them what you did and they should activate
you. If it's an oem version of xp(pre-installed), then your SOL. OEM version
cannot be transfered to another computer, and MS considers the motherboard
the computer. New MB = new computer. Oem can't be transferred to a new
computer, so ms will not activate you. If you have an oem version and ms
won't activate you then you have to buy a retail version. (this is the
downside of oem computers).

At the worst you will have to phone in to explain on activating the
system.

You should start by setting the BIOS so as to boot CD before HD. Then
boot the XP CD, start Setup (do not take 'Repair' at this stage), then
after the license agreement take 'Repair Installation'. This will
retain your existing software installations and most settings but ensure
that the system is properly matched to the hardware. . But Updates will
have to be run again, especially SP1;

This should retain your activation status, though if you have never
registered you may have the setup suggest it now (don't bother). But
you may nevertheless find you have made so many changes that you need to
activate again by phoning in,. At the least you will have changed
motherboard and CPU (and once changed, changing again makes no further
difference). This is well inside tolerance, but you may also have
changed other things without realising. You can read up the detail at
