My hard drive is making awful noises and will likely die soon. How do I move
the copy of XP to a CD so I can install it on the new drive?

Actually you dont need to go that route. The best way,set youre new hd as
slave on the same IDE cable to C: Format the hd,once thru go to run, type:
XCOPY C:\*.* D: /c/h/e/k/r Agree to all in the DOS window, once its thru,
the transfer is complete. Also D: being the new hd but if asigned a diffrent
letter, then use it instead...This works great with xp,however only with IDE
hds.

This method works with 9x/Me. I have never known it to work with XP. In
particular, the registry hives won't be copied.

To transfer XP you need disk-imaging software.

Hi Wayne,

The first priority would be go move any data you do not want to loose off
the drive. Move the data to another physical drive, flash drive or burn it
to a CD/DVD.

Most new drive come with a utility to move the OS to the new drive.

Wayne, ignore the advice above by Andrew E, who is our resident troll in the
XP newsgroups. The only reliable way to copy a Windows installation is with
third-party software such as Acronis TrueImage or Norton Ghost.

Just do a re-install on the new HDD with the OS software that came with your
machine.....

I have the original OS disk, however the last time I used it I had to get a
new key from MS since I'd installed the OS too many times while rebuilding a
machine. I am, not sure MS will give me another key.

But thanks for the reply

The error message you received is somewhat misleading. What it
really means is that you've activated "via the Internet too many times
within the last 120 days." Because there is usually no sound technical
reason for reinstalling and re-activating WinXP so frequently, the
automatic presumption is that the OS is being installed on multiple
machines. I really think Microsoft should fix this message, but it is,
in reality, a relatively minor "cosmetic" issue, so they're probably
giving more weight to some silly cost-benefit analysis more than they
are their customers' occasional confusion.

In actuality, there's no limit to the number of times you can
reinstall and activate the same WinXP license on the same PC. Nor is
there ever a charge. Nor does a Product Key (so long as it's not an
evaluation license) ever expire. If it's been more than 120 days since
you last activated that specific Product Key, you'll most likely be able
to activate via the Internet without problem. If it's been less, you
might have to make a 5 minute phone call.

Here are the facts pertaining to activation:

You can reinstall as often as you like, and there's no reason for Microsoft
to refuse you activation.

Andrew, please go away. Permanently.

You are totally off base, as usual. XCOPY cannot be used to
transfer the Windows XP system drive/partition. Period.
