XP Pro. Virus recovery

D

Dan Murphy

After removing 270 of 300 (w32 weird)infected files using
Norton Anti Virus Pro 2004.
Windows XP Pro.

1 Won't boot in Safe Mode.
2 Start Menu Key doesn't work
3 All desktop Icons are missing
4 Programs are accessable through Task Manager and most
seem to run properly.

My questions:
1 Do I need to re-install XP Pro?
2 What information will be lost - what should be backed up?

Dan;
Try a Repair Installation:
Repair Installation:

Windows Updates will need to be reinstalled.
Data should be safe, back-up important data just in case.
Install Service Pack first and by itself.
Then install ALL Critical Updates no more than 4 at a time,

Disconnect the network/modem cable before starting repair and do NOT
reconnect the cable until repair is completed and firewall is
installed/enabled.
