XP PRO: User Name and Password problem

(I have already raised with different title and got no response. I mentioned
MCE in the subject line and this may have put off potential readers/helpers.
This was done for information purposes only and shouldn't come into it as I
am sure the problem is purely XP).

I recently decided to look for the first time at the admin side of my MCE
computer and put in a User Name, but did NOT put in any password.
This morning when I logged on I got this screen (wide screen).
Horizontal top band (deepish blue) - 15% of screen.
Horizontal central band (light blue) - 65%
Horizontal bottom band (deepish blue) - 20%.
The central band had a white vertical line about 40% along screen.
Top band is blank.
Left central band shows MS logo. below this it states Microsoft Windows XP.
Following line states (my quotes) "To begin, click your user". Next line
under "user", shows "name".
Right central band is blank.
Bottom band at left shows usual "turn-off" symbol with usual "Turn off
computer". At right of this band it states: "After you logon, you can add or
change accounts. Just go to Control Panel & click User Accounts."

The problem with this screen is that there is nothing to tick and no
apparent way forward. Thinking that
my full screen HD ready TV representation was perhaps hiding something at
the margins I
attached a conventional computer monitor, with same results.
On doing Ctrl+Alt+Del I get a conventional Password screen which shows User
Name and asks for Password. Trouble is I have never set a password (unless
my finger/s has inadvertantly caught a key - unlikely I think.
After wasting hours I decided that entering in "safe" mode might help (F8).
Results:
Safe Mode, Safe Mode with networks and Safe Mode with Command Prompt ALL
looped, bring me back to a Safe screen.
Enable boot logging, Last known good configuration, Debugging Mode, Start
Windows normally and Reboot all brought up same "problem" screen.
Enable VGA mode brought up a 4/3 screen which was a squashed version of the
widescreen, but there was an "up" arrow on top of a "down" arrow, but
clicking these brought nothing.
My problem here, in addition to the obvious from above, is that, while I
have other computers with XP PRO, I have always installed myself, whereas
this problem system is a bought system with MCE already installed and I
can't see any recovery CD among the stuff provided by my supplier.
Help is URGENTLY needed.
Thanks.
PS I am thinking of removing the Disk and attaching it to another XP PRO
computer. Will I then be able to access the Control Panel of this disk and
make the changes to remove any/all passwords that are present. If this is
feasible, perhaps some kind person will tell me how to do it.

Have tried hitting Enter instead of typing in a password?
