XP Pro upgrade stuck in startup "loop"

Upgrading to XP Pro and late in the process the computer reboots and reboots
and reboots and reboots.... for over an hour.
I have tried repairing the install, installing again, booting to windows
with no luck. It will also not start in safe mode.

UGHHH!

Any assistance is GREATLY appreciated.

machine is a Compaq Presario SR1601NX
256mb memory
80gb hd

I am having the same problem with a compaq sr1717cl new out of the box, I
have restores the unit three times and did the upgrad and still the same
problem, just keeps rebooting.

512 meg of ram 3.4 gig cpu 200 gig hard drive, works just fine on win xp home.

I think that it has something to do with the boot record but I am not sure
how to fix it, maybe some one can answer this question.
