XP-Pro upgrade fails-corrupt file GDIPLUS.Cat

G

Graeme

I am trying to install XP Professional to upgrade from
98se. I am working per the upgrade instructions provided
with the CD, which was purchased from Microsoft. The
install has failed twice with this error message:

The file C:\$WIN_NT$.~LS\i386\asms\1000
\MSFT\WINDOWS\GDIPLUS.Cat is corrupt; it contains all
zeroes.

Each time the error ocurred it was after about 15-20
minutes of (presumably) copying files off the CD. The only
button on the message window is [Cancel]; that vanishes
the error message. Then the wizard removes everthing it
has done so far and complains that it cannot continue
becasue there was either an error or I aborted it.

A search of the KnowledgeBase and this site produced zero
hits.

Any useful suggestions?

Correction to my earlier post (2/15/2004 at 6:54pm):

The first few times I searched for this problem I used a search term that included several words from the error message and a few others to make it more specific (like "windows xp" and "install"). It now appears that I was TOO specific, because later searches for only "gdiplus" have turned up more information.

BUT - now I am highly CONFUSED as well as frustrated! Looking at all of the information, it now appears that I may need t
* use an older CD-ROM drive, or maybe use a newer one; o
* delete any software from any of several companies (pick one) and try again; or
* download and install the .NET addon for Windows 98 and then do the XP upgrade; or
* beg a new CD from Microsoft with no assurances that it will work any better than the one they sent me last week; o
* boot from the installation CD and do a "new" install (but I purchased an "upgrade" version!); or
* copy the entire installation CD to my hard drive and try to run it from there; or
* copy the entire installation CD to my hard drive, burn that to a new CD, and try to install from that one; or
* boil eye of newt, hair of toad and tongue of snake in muddy water from Puget Sound and sprinkle it on my PC when there is a red moon over Redmond. ;-

Does anyone have any information about which approach is most consitently effective in getting XP to install? The hard drive is freshly reformatted and has only Windows 98se on it. Again, the install fails with the message

The file C:\$WIN_NT$.~LS\i386\asms\1000\MSFT\WINDOWS\GDIPLUS.Cat is corrupt; it contains all zeroes

Thank you

I you hear of any resolution please send.
Thanks!
