XP Pro to XP Pro file sharing read-only issue

Fred

Hello,

I am experiencing the following:

2 PC's with XP Pro SP2 on a LAN.

Both PC's have their D drives (partitions) shared with Share
permissions set to Everyone full control and NTFS permissions set to
Everyone full control. Additionally, named administrative accounts are
set to full control on the D drive as well.

PC1 can map a drive to PC2\D and create, modify and delete files OK.

However, PC2 can map a drive to PC1\D but can only create files - not
edit or delete them. All files opened on PC2 from the share on PC1, are
opened as read-only.

I have checked and re-checked share and NTFS permissions and there is
no difference between PC's. Even if I access the administrative share
on PC1 i.e. \\PC1\d$, with an account that is a member of the
administrators group, same result!

How can this be? Any ideas would be much appreciated.

Fred,

Is the problem computer running Advanced File Sharing?

Are the accounts properly activated for network access?

If neither of the above are useful, check for a known problem with file share
inconsistency:

Hello Chuck,

Thanks for your response.

Having looked at the links I can confirm that simple file sharing is
disabled on both PC's, accounts are properly activated on both PC's
(and passwords synchronised, not using guest account) and the MS patch
issue is somewhat different to my fault in that I can see and access
shared files fine - it is modification or deletion of those files that
is not possible.

I also tried to access the same shared files on PC1 from another XP SP2
pc with same result - so I can be sure that the problem lies with the
sharing PC rather than the clients. As this is a newly built machine I
would be prepared to reinstall or perhaps just reapply service pack 2
and subsequent updates if this might make a difference.

Would you suggest that this is the only way to go from here?

Thanks,
F.

Fred,

Can you modify or delete any files? If the problem is universal on the server,
and is related to operating system software, then re applying a service pack
might provide a solution.

Did the problem start when you applied SP2, or when you applied another hotfix?
If so, re applying SP2 might work. But re applying a service pack, or a hotfix,
or backing out any hotfix, is not a magic bullet. You'll not know what the
actual problem was. And if the problem comes up again, you'll have to start
over.

I'd start by asking when you first observed this problem, and work from there.

Hi Fred,

First of all do you have the latest service packs installed on both
machines? Have you tried deselecting the SHARED setting on the PC that has
the files you want to share and then reselecting it. Some time back there was
a Critical Update regarding Network Shares I don't recall when it came out
and you probably already have it. Unfortunately when it first came out if the
SHARE had been created prior to it's installation it had no affect on
existing SHARES. You had to remove the SHARE and recreate it to fix the
problem. Also double check the users access setings to make sure it allows
for FULL Control and Both READ & WRITE Access on it for specifically named
users.

Hope that helps. Please let us know what the final outcome is.
