Xp pro startup is interrupted by unknown message window

My Xp pro sp2 halts after displaying the message "Windows is starting up".
Background is still blue and a window with only the "ok" button is displayed.
Sometimes a few strange characters are displayed.
The title bar only contains some "Chinese" chars and the close button.
After pressing the "ok" button, startup continues with the message "loading
your personal settings" and completes normally.

could be anything, like
a port being opened by
someone in the middle of
china.....

probably need to ensure
you are not physically connected
to the net, then boot in safe mode
and do some house cleaning.

if safemode doesn't start up as
well, try bootlogging mode to
build a log of what process it
is stumped on. the details/instructions
for this can be found at microsoft.com

if you lost complete control of
booting, then you should do a
windows repair installation...
