I had a new XP Pro installed yesterday by a technician. I find myself left
with three problems. 1. I wish to go directly to the desktop and not to a
sign on page. 2. If I go to Help and Support, wishing to check System
Restore settings, the page System Properties freezes and I can only stop it
by "pulling the plug". 3. Most importantly, on shutdown it does not get
further than the blue "Windows is saving your settings" page. I have to press
the button in for 4 secs to close down. All other systems on the PC are
working fine. Help sincerely appreciated.

Take it back to the technician and tell him to do it right.

If you would rather do it yourself then:

1. Open Control Panel - User Accounts. Select the option to "Change
the way users log on or off" and then choose the option to "Use the
Welcome screen".

If you only have one user account established (other than the default
"Guest" and (hidden except in Safe Mode) "Administrator" accounts) and
if you have not set up a password your computer should now boot
directly to the desktop.

2. See MVP Bert Kinney's System Restore pages:
http://bertk.mvps.org/index.html regarding this item.

3. See MVP Jim Eshelman's Shutdown Troubleshooter for Windows XP at
http://aumha.org/win5/a/shtdwnxp.htm

Good luck
