Not able to rid my present XP pro of virus' and corruption after weeks of
trying and lots of help. Sooooo: I am installing a NEW drive today (I
hope). I have XP pro OEM sp2 (version 2002) disk. I have it installed now
with sp3 added. I hate the interface at startup and shutdown, they have
drop-down menus and are a pain in the neck. How can I install a newer
version with easier interface and sp3 all at once ?
TIA
Caroline

Do you mean you don't have the "welcome screen". If that is so then go to
control panel and select "user accounts" then "user accounts" again and then
"change the way users log on or off". That should get you the more user
friendly screen.

No, it is a welcome screen but not the familiar one we are accustomed to.
Actually it is approx. a 4 X 8" window with a drop down menu containing:
shut down, restart, hybernate etc. for the ending and the same size window
for signing in for each user and password. I have never seen this sort of
start up and shut down window display except on this installation.
The usual display is an icon with user name to boot in and use of icons to
choose from at the shut down. If it were permissable to post html here, I
would post a snapshot.

Ohhhhh, I found what you were referring to but having difficult time
changing it. I will prevail eventually ;o) Now I must find a way to
slipstream my sp2 disk to an sp3 disk.....

Glad you found the setting and that should give you the welcome screen. The
only thing I can think of is that you perhaps selected "domain" instead of
"workgroup" during the install. Check it in system properties and make sure
workgroup is set. (system properties>computer name)
good luck
