XP Pro Login to Network Hangs at "Applying personal Settings"

I have about a dozen XP Pro machines on a 2k/AD server.
About 2 weeks ago the computers began to hang for about 10
minutes when they get to the "Applying personal settings"
phase of startup. The server see's the user just fine and
it appears that the security portion of the login is
complete. Is anyone aware of a situation where one of the
security patches might cause this issue. Other than those
updates I don't see any changes in the server
configuration.

See my answer to "DNS problem" below, are the DNS
settings configured correctly?

I believe so. The system is behind a firewall and I allow
the server to query an external DNS server. This server
is also handed to the workstations via DHCP.

So, are we saying that during this particular phase of
startup the laptop is accessing DNS
from the net and it has to time out before it completes?
