login hangs

A couple of workstations can not login to the network, users could login
before, but now when users login, it hangs, there is no error message, only
"applying settings....." then pc has to be rebooted.
this happens even if I tried to login as domain admin.
I can login as local admin and can access network by the way of
explorer/tools/map network drive.
Sometimes when user logins, the login windows pops up again.
If I boot in save mode with network, it allows me to login.
these pcs can not login normally
These pcs have WIndows XP pro

Appreciate any help

Check the DNS settings on the workstations - they should be looking only at
the domain DNS for name resolution.
