I have XP Pro (SP1) installed with all Windows Updates. I know of the
bug (KB 307274 - http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=307274), but even
when I go to Windows Update and try to install just the Restarting
Windows XP update, my computer displays the following message: "The
version of Windows you have installed does not match the update you are
trying to install." Is this because it is already installed with SP1?
And if so, why is my computer still hanging up on the Saving your
setting screen?

Help me! :-) It is annoying me, especially since I have done
everything that the Knowledge Base tells me to do. I recently had to
restore my computer (using a backup utility program called Simple Backup
by Veritas). I had formatted my HD, reinstalled Windows, and then
restored it from a backup I made in Nov. Before the restore, my
computer would not boot into Windows (never figured out why), and before
that problem (it started in June), I did not have this shutdown bug.

Thanks,
Shawn

Shawn, there are a vareity of causes for shutdown hangs even if SP1 is
installed, such as an application or service hanging when Windows tells
it to stop. See this link for troubleshooting tips on shutdown problems:

That fix was included in SP1 (it says so at the bottom of the page), so
this was not the reason for the hang. There are a lot of possible
causes: Look at the extensive troubleshooter at James Eshelman`s page:
specific XP section at

I just wanted to write a quick note of thanks to the three of you
(Hilary, Alex, and Rich) that helped me with my issue. It is fixed!

thanks,
Shawn

Great to hear that Shawn. Btw..what was the solution so others can
benefit from it?

It seemed to do with having three user accounts all open, as I use quick
switching on the accounts. Two is fine, but once I get to three, my
system hangs on the Saving settings.

The third account is the Guest account, which is never used, but
recently I have had, well, guests over, so the all three of my accounts
were all logged on when I was trying to reboot. Logging out of them
before the reboot and or shutdown seems to do the trick.

Thanks once again,
Shawn
