XP Pro Installation Freeze?

I have a Gateway 600XL Notebook that got hit by a virus. I have written the
drive to zero's and tried to install XP Pro. Installation gets to where it
says there is only two minutes remaining in install before it freezes up. I
have tried a different XP disc, hoping there was something wrong on the disc
but it didn't matter. The drive has been through several extended tests and
appears to be completely fine. It has a pentium 3 and 512mb ram, but beyond
that I don't know what other details to put in here.

Any ideas on why I can't even get XP to install?

Thanks in advance

Try testing your RAM. I use Memtest86 from www.memtest86.com. Make
either a bootable floppy with the precompiled Windows binary or
download the .iso to make a bootable cd. Obviously, you'll need to do
this from a working machine with an Internet connection. If you want a
bootable cd, you'll need third-party burning software on that machine.

Whatever the media, boot with it and the test will run immediately.
Allow it to run for at least a few hours, unless you see errors
immediately. If you see errors, replace the RAM.
