I have a P4 Workstation, 512 RAM with XP Prof. operating
system and at random times/days it just freezes, no
keyboard and mouse response what so ever. I do a reboot
when it locks, it then fixes for a short time then it locks
up in a day or hours later. I have booted into "safe mode"
and it will lock up on the driver "mup.sys". However if I
let the 30 second choice timer in the safe mode time out
then the system boots properly most of the time but it will
lock up again in 5 mins, an hour or sometime soon. I also
upgraded to the latest service pack in Xp and I still have
the problem. I even tried other keyboards and mice. I have
tried the PS2 mice and keyboards and the USB keyboards and
mice but to no avail.
Please help I am going crazzzzzzyyy.

Do a repair XP re-install and do a complete virus scan. I encountered this
on 3 new XP PCs and it was caused buy a self-replicating virus that my
client had brought onto the XP from an older PC.

I can't tell what's wrong with your PC by the data you provided, but I
can tell you it's NOT related to MUP.SYS. MUP is that last driver to
load, so that's why you think it's causing the lockup. Whatever
causes this happens immediately after mup.sys loads. Have you changed
anything lately?
