Mouse and keyboard not working

Situation: a friend's XP Home stopped booting--even in safe mode--after
doing latest updates from MS Update. (BSOD c0000269 - illegal relocation of
DLL) Got that fixed by running a batch spuninstl of SP2 from the recovery
console. Now it will boot to the login screen, but neither the mouse nor the
keyboard is working at all. Both are PS/2. Have tried both safe mode and
normal boot, as well as two different mice and two different keyboards.
(Only one of the mice is optical, btw.) Mouse and keyboard work fine in the
BIOS and to run the recovery console from the CD, but neither will work
inside Windows. I'd appreciate any suggestions!

Thanks, James. I started the process described in the article, but in "part
two" I am unable to boot to safe mode. The file list stops at
\WINDOWS\System32\Drivers\Mup.sys every time. Suggestions for continuing? I
really appreciate your help.
