xp pro freezing

my computer has recently starded freezing totally. it
happens randomly at no certain time. every thing totally
locks up. i cannot do anything and just have to restart
the pc. when i restart, the pc asks we whether i would
like to start up normally using XP or start up by going
back to a time where it all worked correctly. i tried
this but the problem still occurs. can anyone help.

Have you added any new hardware/software recently? Have a look in the Event
Viewer to see if there are any entries that might point to the problem.
