XP Pro Error: 1068

Hi there.

I've just relaoded a Dell Laptop (Latitude D505) with Windows XP Pro.
Everything went fine, all the drivers etc went in OK.
Next I downloaded & installed AVG Free & Spybot Search & Destroy, both went
in OK too.
Finally I took the laptop up to the Windows Update site & it pulled down
80odd updates, all of which also went in OK. The last of which was Internet
Explorer 7, after which the laptop restarted.
Booting back into Windows it seems much slower - not unusual if its
config'ing the new updates, but then it pops up to say Windows Firewall is
Turned off & when I try to enable it, it brings up the following error:

Windows Firewall cannot be displayed because the associated service is not
running, do I want to enable ICS?

If I choose yes it comes back with:

Windows cannot start ICS Service.

So I go into services & try it manually & thats when I get the 1068 error.

I have gone through a couple of Microsofts Help & Support posts on the site
but nothing seems to work.
If I enable or start some of the associated services, they just stop again
shortly afterwards.

The only way I've found to fix it is to do a system restore & start again,
but if I run the updates I get the same problem occour.

I've also lost the network (RJ45) & Wireless connections from the Network
Connections.

If I run: cmd /k sc qc sharedaccess I get this in return:

[SC] GetServiceConfig SUCCESS

SERVICE_NAME: sharedaccess
TYPE : 20 WIN32_SHARE_PROCESS
START_TYPE : 2 AUTO_START
ERROR_CONTROL : 1 NORMAL
BINARY_PATH_NAME : C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe -k netsvcs
LOAD_ORDER_GROUP :
TAG : 0
DISPLAY_NAME : Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing
(ICS)
DEPENDENCIES : Netman
: WinMgmt
SERVICE_START_NAME : LocalSystem

Any ideas? Other than doing another system restore & turning off the updates??

You didn't elaborate on if you do have a protection software like
a Internet security software or Anti-virus with firewall, if you do have one
then the Anti-virus firewall will Disable the Windows Firewall by default.

You cannot start the Windows Firewall service in Windows XP SP2

Trouble shooting Windows built-in firewall
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/890158/en-us

Open a run command and type in:
regedit click [OK]
Locate this key and make the changes:
[-] HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\
SharedAccess\Parameters\FirewallPolicy\StandardProfile
Value Name: EnableFirewall
Data Type: REG_DWORD
Value Data: 0 is OFF and 1 is ON

To reinstate the Windows Firewall service (SP2 only), use the
sharedaccess.reg file here.

Hi & thanks for the speedy reply.

I have done as suggested with no luck.

I have only AVG Free installed & Spybot S&D. No other programs or firewalls
have been installed.

The system is now very slow on bootup, taking 3 or 4 mins to finished
loading from producing the background image, where as before it was almost
instant (as one would expect with a fresh load)

I run a IT shop & can say I've never come across this before, I've always
run XP Pro with SP2 & its own firewall??

I've noticed too that the username isn't what I orignally set it at, rather
than being 'Dell' its 'Administrator' & if I go into User Accounts it only
has Administrator listed - odd, maybe this is a side effect of the above
problem.

Try Resetting the TCPIP Stack and Winsock

Start > run > cmd

netsh int ip reset reset.log
netsh winsock reset

Restart the Computer and Try to Start the Service
