XP PRO entry refusal INCLUDING SAFE MODE

Tom

New notebook running XP PRO. After boot the screen is
split by a line down the middle. The right side is blank.
The left has the Windows logo and "To begin, click user
name." There is nothing to click and no way to proceed.

USING SAFE MODE, IN ANY CONFIGURATION RESULTS IN THE SAME
SCREEN
