XP Pro competer crashes, won't boot ,won't reinstall

I was playing a game (civ 4, which had a flakey install) and the computer
just shut off and rebooted. It posted fine, it went through the boot loader
and the windows logo and loading bar came up then it rebooted again. I tried
a repair install and the error message "Setup can not set the required
Windows XP configuration information. This indicates an internal setup error.
Contact your system administrator.". There is a support page @
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=316425 which says that there is
incompatible hardware, but I have had the same hardware setup for months and
I am currenty running off a different partition running a different install
off the same CD so all the hardware is working. I also installed windows on a
third partition as a test, that went fine. I've heard there issues with
upgrading from something like XP home SP2 to XP pro SP1, but that shouldn't
be an issue because have a XP Pro SP2 disk. Is there some corrupeted file
that needs to be repaired or deleted? I would really hate to have to start
over again I had issues with an ATI driver that I had to start over because
of, less then two months ago. I have a 100+ hours of setup time in that
install. Ohh and by the way I can't get help from Microsoft because I have a
OEM disk, so I would have to pay $40 per e-mail I send to them.
