I built a small wired LAN network for 2 PC's. I use a LINKSYS FastCable/DSL
router and an Ericsson Pipe Rider cable modem. I have an XP Pro PC and an
XP Home PC connected on this network. Originally our connections to the
internet and between 2 PC's worked great, we could share files and printers
and access the internet. Everything worked great!

Recently I upgraded my XP Pro PC with SP2. We can both still connect to the
internet throught the modem and router with no problems

However, now when I try to create a Network Place using the Network Wizzard,
from the upgraded XP Pro machine, it doesn't work. In the panel where if
asks "What is the address of this network place?" no network places are
listed in the dropdown despite the fact that there are several shares on
both of the PC's. Additionally, when I use the "browse" function to find
connections, I can find no connections. When, under "browse" I work my way
down from the "Entire Network" through "Microsoft Windows Network" but can
find no shared places.

Also the other PC (the XP Home PC with SP2) can created Network Places from
its own shares - - but doesn't recognize existing shares on the XP Pro PC.

Assistance will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

This sounds like a misconfigured firewall. Service Pack 2 automatically
enables the Windows Firewall. If you are not running a third-party
firewall, go to the Windows Firewall applet in Control Panel and enable
File & Printer Sharing on the Exceptions tab. If you are using a
third-party firewall (and have properly configured it to allow your lan
traffic as Trusted), then turn the Windows Firewall off. You don't want
two firewalls running, and a third-party program will be better than
the WF. All firewalls must be properly configured to allow lan traffic
as Trusted.

Otherwise, here is an excellent network troubleshooter by MVP Hans-Georg
Michna. Take the time to go through it and it will pinpoint the problem
area(s).

I am using the WF, however the exception was already checked to allow "File
and Printer Sharing." I'll try the othre resource you mentioned. In the
interim, if you think of any other ideas, I'll be listening. Thank you!
