xp pro bounces between login screen and desktop

I have an xp pro machine that bounces between the login
screen and the desktop.

After the machine boots up, you click the login screen, the
system states 'Loading your personal settings...'

The desktop is then visible very briefly (I don't see the
desktop icons, the desktop shows for a second or less).

The system then shows 'Logging off....' and immediately
returns to the login screen.

Any idea on why this is happening? More importantly, any
idea about how I can get out of this loop?

I get the same thing with windows XP. Has anyone found
the answer for you yet?

I just got this problem as well. Must be a virus or
something that is affecting numerous people and this
really sucks.

I tried all the safe modes and last good configuration,
however, nothing works.

I hope someone find the problem and lets us all know ASAP.
