xp pro backup problem

I have been trying to backup and get messages (not all the
time) similar to the following message (backing up to e:
hard drive hooked up to usb port). Any suggestions would
be greatly appreciated.

Purchase a copy of a backup program.
ie: Drive Image, True Image, Ghost etc etc.

Frank,

The programs you listed are not backup programs. They create images
of the HD as a whole. Although that is very useful, it is not what a
true backup program does.
