Hi all,

Will Windows XP Pro see and use all four cores
of a new quad core processor assuming that the
application can do the same? The app that I use
is quad core compatible.

later,
charles....

Interesting article, didn't help me though I found the info I needed
from another source.

thanks......

Could you share for those who might find your article in the future with the
same or similar questions?

Actually my original question was not worded correctly because of some
preconditions that I had that were incorrect. Quads from Intel as they are
designed are more of a dual core with hyperthreading, thus getting four
execution unit pathways. Two of the cores are tied together in pairs unlike
the new Opteron that has just come out. It is a true quad.
XP Pro along with all the other goodies that come
with it has the ability to run on TWO SOCKETS at the same time. XP Home
of course can not do this, it is limited to ONE socket. But it does not
have
a core limitation http://www.pcper.com/article.php?aid=301
Theoretically when Intel comes out with its' 80 core cpu in 2012, XP Home
should take advantage of all that power (assuming no legal or tech changes
between now and then). I have a friend/customer who wanted a faster
quad core cpu to run a program called POSER 7. I built such a computer but
made the mistake of installing VISTA. Just about ALL of his other programs
will not even install on the system even though it kicks butt with regard to
running Poser 7. I had to determine if I could replace it with XP Pro or
XP Home and since it is a single cpu motherboard, it appears that XP Home
is the winner.
