XP Pro 64 Problem

I upgraded to XP Pro 64 using CD received from Microsoft. Apparently the
trial time expired, and now my system will only boot into safe mode. I
called Microsoft and they said that I need to reformat my hard disk. Is
there a workaround? Can I uninstall Pro 64 from safe mode?

You'll need to reformat your hard drive and then install
a different Windows operating system, such as Windows XP.

The Windows XP CD is bootable and contains all the tools necessary
to partition and format your drive. Follow this procedure and allow
Windows XP to partition and format your drive:

NOTE: It would be best to physically disconnect all your peripheral hardware
devices, except the monitor, mouse and keyboard, before installing XP.

NOTE: If you have an internal Zip Drive installed, physically disconnect the
EIDE and power cable to it before proceeding, otherwise your main
hard drive may not be assigned the customary C: drive letter.
After installing Windows XP, you may then reconnect it.

1. Open your BIOS and set your "CD Drive as the first bootable device".

2. Insert your Windows XP CD in the CD Drive and reboot your computer.

3. You'll see a message to boot to the CD....follow the instructions.

4. The setup menu will appear and you should elect to delete all the existing
Windows partitions, then create a new partition, then format the primary
partition (preferably NTFS) and proceed to install Windows XP.

5. Clean Install Windows XP

6. ==> Immediately after installing Windows XP, turn on XP's Firewall.

7. After Windows XP is installed, visit the Windows Update website
and download the available "Critical Updates".

8. After installing the critical updates, be sure and visit the support website
of the manufacturer of the computer to download and install any
available Windows XP compatible drivers, such as video adapter
and audio drivers.

9. If you happen to run into any installation difficulties, use the following resources:

Is the issue data files you need to retrieve? If so do you have another XP
computer in which you can mount the hard drive as a data drive and get your
files off that way?

Yes, my problem is that I want to salvage my data and previous XP config.
I'm using a Laptop. Can I still get a network connection to transfer the
files to anoth XP Laptop?
Thanks.

You cannot make a network connection with a computer that hasn't finished
starting up.

Since you use laptops a lot, one handy item is a 2.5" external drive
enclosure that connects by usb to provide an external drive. If you have
one you can transfer the drive into an enclosure and then use it as a data
drive with the other laptop. That should be sufficient for what you want to
do. One caveat is that if the drive you want to copy from is NTFS and the
good laptop is running FAT32 it will not work. If they are both NTFS you
should be fine.

I guess I have to ask this, but how did you get into a situation where you
were using important data on a beta version of an OS?

http://www.nu2.nu - contains enough drivers, etc. that you should be able to
create a network and grab the data. If not try http://www.ubcd4win.com/
which uses Bart's (the first link) as a base and has been moded for a larger
driver set.

Nex time, don't touch beta code unless you know what you're doing and have a
full state backup to which you can revert with minimal data loss.
