can i follow these instructions to wipe my hard drive and upgrade from my
current 32bit edition of xp pro to a 64 bit edition of xp pro.

i normally wouldn't ask such a simple question but i haven't installed my
own OS in years, and i currently live 1200 miles from the guy that built my
current computer so i can't exactly take it back to him.

The question is why go to a 64-bit operating system?
Do you actually have 64-bit applications that could benefit?

Is your processor 64bit capable? ie has it one of the following :- AMD
Athlon 64, AMD Opteron, Intel Xeon with Intel EM64T support, Intel Pentium 4
with Intel EM64T support

I don't mean to be rude, but all my hardware is 64 bit compliant. I've done
my research and I prefer working with XP pro over working with Vista. Hence
my decision to install the 64 bit edition. I've already got the 64 bit
edition OEM software disc and all i have to do is backup my hard-drive and
reformat. it's just been so long since i've done my own reformatting that i
don't recall the entire process from memory, so i'm asking this community to
help me remember.

I do appreciate you guys looking out to make sure i don't go wasting money
though. and below is the information you requested.

Processor: AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 5400+, MMX, 3DNow (2
CPUs), ~2.8GHz

The option to format is part of the setup routine, you don't have to do
anything special other than tell the setup routine to format the drive
during initial setup.

Thanks for the reply Dave, but what I really need is something step-by-step I
can print and use as a guide to the steps I'll be taking to perform the
actual task of reformatting/installing/whatever you feel happy calling it.
hence my original question, "

" >> > can i follow these instructions to wipe my hard drive and upgrade

Yes.

Install your OS following the steps Windows XP (all versions) leads you
through anyway during an install.
Be sure you have all the hardware drivers ready to install - as 64-bit
drivers can be sometimes difficult to come by (less so now than in the
past.)

Thank you very much for the help!
