XP Pro / 2nd hd on pci raid card

....can anyone point me to information about the "???? or dynamic" option
that xp pro chucks up when installing a sata hd on a pci raid card, and
also why fat32 option was not available in one of those little XP dialogue
boxes that popped up when xp pro detected the new drive. I thought that xp
supported fat32 partitions larger than 32gb - in fact I have a 46.3 gb drive
on one of my 80gb hd's in my xp home ed. PC.

background.....
This afternoon I trundled along to a friends house (Alan) to put in a 120gb
2nd hd that he'd bought a few weeks ago, he was afraid to fit it, so he left
it for me ...( thanx I quietly thought to myself ! ). A quick look at it
revealed that it was a sata hd with "blade" connectors, and so would not fit
his machine. I 'phoned our local pc shop and they didn't have any sata to
ide converters, (not that I like the horrid great things hanging on the back
of a hard disk anyway), but, they did have pci raid cards in stock - so he
shot into town and bought one.

XP pro is on drive D:\ on his first 40gb hd, ( split into 3 x fat32
drives - c: d: and e: ), partly because he used to dual boot with W98se.
C:\ is now just used for storage and of course has to be kept because ntldr,
ntdetect.com, boot.ini is on it .... i thought there was 4th file in there
....or did his system delete that one when he switched off dual boot in his
xp pro ? ...god my memory's getting bad, I can't remember the name of the
dual boot batch file!

....and just out of curiosity, I've just looked in my c:\ root directory and
why have I got the following files on my machine ?
## ...sounds of cogwheels grinding....## ....I installed my xp home ed. by
first installing W98se then upgrading ?
26/01/2004 16:53 0 CONFIG.SYS
26/01/2004 16:53 0 AUTOEXEC.BAT
26/01/2004 16:53 0 IO.SYS
26/01/2004 16:53 0 MSDOS.SYS
....and why do I have a c:\me directory with one file in it explorer.exe
version 5.50.4134.100 that's not my xp home ed. explorer.exe is it ?
....I wonder if I unpacked a copy of it for a machine with ME on it ...yes I
did ...a lady called Rhona ...it's all coming back to me now !

....I muchly digress:-

I fitted Alan's pci raid card and sata hd into his system box and hooked it
all up - and had a major cable tidy up inside his system box - and installed
the driver for it, and his xp pro detected the new 120 gb sata hd, and a
couple of small xp dialogue boxes popped up and referred to it as "drive 1"
(bios type enumeration e.g. first hd is 0 - second is 1 ??), which I thought
was misleading. The first xp dialogue box wanted to know how we'd like it
formatted - NTFS was the only one on offer in the drop down slot - so of
course we chose that. The next one wanted to know if we wanted ???? or
dynamic. Well, I remembered reading somewhere that if you're not running
Windows Server 2003 etc. ...then you don't need "dynamic" for sata/raid
hd's so we chose the first option, can't remember what is was called now.
All was lovely, formatted the thing in Disk Manager services which took five
hours ...well it seemed that way - it was actually 20 minutes or so.

So now he has a new 120gb sata hd F:\ drive on a pci raid card, which he
didn't really need, ( but, will of course be useful because he's dabbling
with a dvd burner), simply because he didn't change the "temp" directory
path setting in his Roxio DVD burning software to a drive with enough room
on it, like I told him to do weeks ago when he 'phoned me with Roxio's "not
enough storage space" type error message. It was pointing to the Roxio
default directory on his xp pro - D:\ drive which only has about 1.5 gb's of
free space.

So can anyone point me to information about the "???? or dynamic" option
that xp pro chucks up when installing a sata hd on a pci raid card, and
also why fat32 option was not available in one of those little XP dialogue
boxes that popped up when xp pro detected the new drive. I thought that xp
supported fat32 partitions larger than 32gb - in fact I have a 46.3 gb drive
on one of my 80gb hd's in my xp home ed. PC.
.....I'll paste this in at the top seeing as how I've droned on a bit !! :)

XP supports use of a larger FAT 32 partition if created by another
system, but will not create one itself bigger than 32 GB

Dynamic disk is a way of making a set of hard disks look like a single
one, and allow (reasonably) easy removal and replacement of individual
ones. It is important in server setups on corporate nets, I would
advise against using it on any stand alone machine. Some people like to
use pairs of disks on Raid controllers as formal RAID arrays, to get
higher performance in some situations: I am sceptic of the benefits, and
in any case in the RAID level that does that you put the whole at risk
if either disk fails
