RAID configuration - basic question

If a 8-port SATA II PCI RAID controller is on a PC on which Windows XP Pro
SP 2 is to be installed, is there a software RAID solution that will enable
us to configure 8 hard drives as 4 mirrored pairs?
I.e. presenting four drives to the system?
The OS and all software will be on a separate drive connected to the
on-board SATA II controller.
The mirrored pairs will hold only data.
Regards and TIA.

You have a hardware RAID card and you are attempting to set up a software
raid on it. That doesn't make sense. Check all the documentation for the
controller and it's associated drivers to see if this is possible using the
controller.

Ehlo Avatar,
I believe that if you've got RAID controllers on your motherboard, you should
be able to access its settings and set up the mirroring.

It makes sense for what he is asking. The hardware RAID cannot handle 8
drives...

I didn't see where he identified the actual controller, but many 8 Port
RAID controllers accept 8 drives, but not all of them allow you to
create 4 x RAID-1 arrays, most of them allow a RAID 0+1 or RAID 5, but
all 8 port RAID controllers allow all 8 drives to be used if properly
configured.

The OP said "If a 8-port SATA II PCI RAID controller is on a PC..." I would
assume it can handle 8 drives in one form or another to establish a RAID.
Just don't know if that card will create the 4 raid 1 setups he wants as he
didn't give a model for the PCI RAID card.
