Change from IDE to SATA/RAID after install of XP Pro?

In order to get Win98SE to boot with DVD, CD, LS120 + HD, I had to change
SATA HD from IDE3 Enhanced (mobo auto) to RAID with this Abit IS7-G BIOS,
even though it's the only HD in the system -- cuz W98 won't recognize more
than 1 IDE controller from the ICH5R chipset. I've tried all the latest
drivers I could find and none make W98 see TWO IDE controllers as XP Pro does.

New prob: My XP Pro SP2 won't boot with the new RAID config -- presumably
because the HD was in IDE3 mode during the initial XP installation. This is
a dual boot setup and I now must change BIOS config each time I boot to a
different OS.

Question: Is there a registry hack whereby I may manually fix the RAID
drivers and avoid doing a repair install of XP? The SATA/RAID controllers do
show up in XP's Device Manager, so theoretically shouldn't I be able to
change the registry (and maybe an .ini) to trick XP into thinking it had
configured itself for SATA/RAID in the original installation?

Thanks..

The IC7-G uses the 82801EB Ultra controller for IDE,it uses the 82801ER SATA/
RAID controller, both should be in device mgr.To run only SATA,you need to
set the BIOS to:Combined Mode Enhanced is for RAID,you're not running RAID.
To get xp to set up SATA or RAID drives, you need to use the F6 option in the
xp installation (boot to xp cd),it copies the drivers from the floppy disk
for
set up.So you changed a SATA drive from a IDE setting to a RAID configuration
and with only 1 SATA drive????You dont need a registry fix,you need to read
and follow the owners manual from ABIT....

As I said, I'm using the IS7-G, not the IC7-G -- yes, I know both use the
82801EB/R. As I said, XP lists both IDE controllers and the RAID controller.
As I said, W98 sees the RAID controller but only *ONE* of the two IDE
controllers -- that's the problem.

Why on earth would I use ONE HD in a RAID configuration?!?!? That's
insane!!!!

You must have skimmed past the first sentence where I said "in order to get
Win98SE to boot". That means that doing what I did is the ONLY way it will
boot using all the drives in question. If ya don't believe me, feel free to
try every BIOS/drive/cable/driver permutation there is for these drives and
this mobo. I did. Nothing else worked. W98 boot hangs.

Since the BIOS will not allow the SATA HD to share an IDE controller with
one of the IDE drives (yes, I tried), the ONLY way to boot W98 with all
drives in place is to set the HD as SATA/RAID. This prevents the IS7-G from
using IDE channels other than IDE1 or IDE2, which are the only ones W98
recognizes.

I need W98 for older software which cannot be made to run under XP.
yabbut.. but... that's what compatibility mode is for! well sure! So,
tossing out W98 isn't an option.

I'm unfortunately very familiar with Abit boards. In fact, gotta replace
all the bad caps in one on the bench now.
As for this particular situation, the manual -- and BIOS update readme's --
are no help when it comes to this issue with W98. And why would they be?
That W98 fails to recognize both IDE controllers is either a W98 limitation
or an Intel/Abit driver inadequacy, and Abit, like most, isn't very
interested in spending time on antiquated OS's.

With DVD, CD and LS120 occupying IDE1 & IDE2, the mobo defaults the SATA HD
to IDE3 Enhanced (according to BIOS). XP doesn't know or care what Abit's
idea of Enhanced is, as it works perfectly like that. And W98 doesn't know
or care that it's using a single SATA HD in RAID mode, as it works perfectly
like that. The problem is that XP and W98 don't work with the _same_ BIOS
config.

My question was what can I do with Windows XP to avoid reinstallation.
Since you invoked F6, I see you don't have an answer to that question.
Thanks anyway..
