XP POWER OPTIONS PROBLEM

When I attempt to create a new power scheme and save it (under a new name and
pressing the SAVE AS button), it seems to work, but after I close the dialog
and reopen it my newly saved power option disappears.
I experienced this a year or so ago, and I was able to find the solution in
the Knowledge Base. However, that solution seems to be no longer out there.
Anyone got the answer??? THANKS!
