Power options are kaputt

A

Andy

I can't find out why the power options aren't working.

So far I have

1. Applied a windows patch
2. I have the newest video drivers

I also read that a lot of people experienced the same thing when they went to SP3.
Any other areas to check ?

I've never heard of anything like that happening because of SP-3
but I do have a question:
Did you read and follow the instructions about what to do
before installing SP-3?
Are you sure you had the right SP3? The entire SP3 is
humongous so one usually downloads the one for his brand of OS
and computer.

If all that's OK, you might try uninstalling SP3 and see if
the problem gets fixed. I doubt very much it will.
What I would try is to run a chkdsk /r on your boot driive.
It'll ask you to Restart in order to run it; that's normal for
the boot drive. That might fix it.
Always, before you do anything that's OS intensive like
chkdsk, be sure to make a full backup first. XP does have its own
backup program so a third party app is not necessary. And if
you're not doing regular backups, you should get a process going
where you do it regularly for all drives. Then when a drive fails
you at least can get all the iinformation back.

Failing that, a good AV/A Malware attack is probably next, just
to be sure you don't have anything like malware on the machine.

Another thing to try is to do an XP "repair in place". You won't
lose any programs or data, but be sure you have a backup in place
first anyway.
I remember how to get there this way: Boot from the original
XP disk or recovery disk or whatever you have, and watch the
screen. One of the first screens will have an "R" choice - do NOT
use that one. Keep going and the SECOND time you see an "R"
choice, use that one. It will recopy all the necessary files onto
your drive, thus "repairing" any corrupted files.
Or, if no disk, use whatever recovery method was provided with
the computer. Doing a complete INstall of XP will mean all your
programs will need to be reinstalled, plus updates since SP3.
And you do know that SP1 or 2 must be installed before you can
install SP3, right?

Go to MS and get the instructions on what to do before
installiing SP3.

Andy

Doing a re-install is way too extreme.

How it's not working?

Which one is that?

Power options are set for turning off the monitor and hard drive after a set amount of time. Neither works.

Power options are related to "ACPI".

I'd start, just for fun, by using Device Manager
(start run devmgmt.msc)...

then look at the Computer entry. Under my Computer
entry, I have:

ACPI Multiprocessor PC

The ACPI part is the important bit. If it
doesn't say ACPI, that might explain things
a bit.

I went there using I.E. and got this message.

All 3 service were running.

Andy

The site cannot continue because one or more of these Windows services is not running:

Automatic Updates (allows the site to find, download and install high-priority updates for your computer)
Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) (helps updates download more quickly and without problems if the download process is interrupted)
Event Log (keeps a record of updating activities to help with troubleshooting, if needed)

Did you save your Old Xp "INI, System,
and System32" Folder and it files,
To D:\

if so you can reinstall your video drivers,
from D:\windows\System,
To C:\windows\System..

And have you video up and running as good as before..

If you did not save C:\windows to D:\,
Excite Time do it always..
it wall save you time in reinstalling drivers..

If you mean "No-one works for Microsoft in a newsgroup", then you're
_probably_ correct - since MS stopped dealing with newsgroups, then it
is _likely_ - though not certain - that none of their employees do their
work in a newsgroup. If, however, you meant "No-one in a newsgroup works
for Microsoft", then that is unlikely to be correct: I've not heard of
them actually forbidding their employees from take part in usenet, and
even if they did, who's to say that some here aren't MS employees under
aliases or similar. But in view of your next sentence
And 85% of the People here do not have a Windows OS..

, I suspect you're just trolling anyway. Since your post was to one
newsgroup only, then those "here" are very likely to have a Windows OS:
I'd certainly challenge you to back up your claim.

(Sounds like a poem, with that comma placed where you placed it! ["be"
rhymed with "mp3".]
From Windows Updates at..
[snip stuff on video updates.]

Do you _know_ that updating the video driver will solve the OP's
problems with power options, or are you just recommending them as a
variation on "reboot your machine"?

The true will to solve the OP's problems,
Was at the beginning..
all he need was to install over he old Xp,
or save his backup of files in
WINDOWS, INF, SYSTEM, SYSTEM32 folders,
too D:\
and he would for able to update Drives..

as I always say:::::::::::::::
At no time Format partition 2 D: System-Recovery
All keep a backup of files in WINDOWS, INF, SYSTEM, SYSTEM32 folders,

Now that Microsoft no longer has its own newsgroups, there are
probably extremely few Microsoft employees in any newsgroup.

But back in the days of Microsoft newsgroups, there were certainly
Microsoft employees in them--not many, but some.

And today, when Microsoft uses web-based forums instead of newsgroups,
there are certainly Microsoft employees in those.

You still haven't explained your source for that belief (let alone that
figure).
so you in the 10% John that do..

How on _Earth_ did you come to that conclusion? (Which is wrong, BTW.)

I doubt we could run one that would be statistically valid. (FWIW - my
PCs _are_ MS OS - XP on this my main one, and 2 × '98SElite.)
