Can anyone help me with this:

I've applied custom pictures to a lot of folders, but now the wrong pictures
are appearing on folders all over the place! Even default folders where you
cannot choose custom settings.

I've tried deleting thumbs.db files (but they can't be deleted and going
through every folder will take forever) and have deleted IconCache.db . I
have also selected Do Not Cache Thumbnails in Folder Options, but nothing
seems to work.

Another thing that may or may not be related:

Pictures keep appearing partially 'greyed out' in my browser. I thought it
was just a problem with Firefox until I noticed it happening in the task
bar....

Any help much appreciated.

I don't think that thumbnails have anything to do with the picture on
a folder icon

You could try the following to reset Folder icon pictures

Right click on a problem folder icon and choose Properties then choose
the Customise tab.

In the Folder Pictures section choose "Restore defaults"

If applicable, also check the box "Also apply this template to all
sub-folders"

Thanks for trying to help, John, but this is only a short term solution as I
am constantly selecting "Restore Default" on folders only to return to find
the picture has changed again.

I thought this might be a well known bug within XP and I could find a
permanent solution rather than having to reinstall the OS, which I am
seriously considering now.

Have you tried
- "Reset all folders" in Folder Options/View? or
- find a folder that is OK and go "appy to all folders" in Folder
Options/View?

OK, I have tried everything that has been mentioned above and I am still
having the same problems. I even searched for all thumbs.db files in Safe
Mode and deleted them one by one. I am still getting pictures on folders that
shouldn't have a thumbnail.

If I was to reinstall the OS, would it be possible to do it without having
to uninstall programs?

I misinformed you earlier - Thumbnails may well be associated with
what your problem is.

But first, can you do a System Restore back to before you started
fiddling with the folder pictures? - if so, that should clear the
problem.

Did you initially set the folder picture using the "Folder Pictures"
option or the "Folder Icons" option?

There must be a way of resetting your folders, unless your system is
really screwed up. Try the following:

Open My Computer, open Local Disk C:, click on Tools/Folder
options/View then uncheck the option "Hide Protected Operating System
Files"

Click OK

Click on Search then "All files & Folders, enter "thumbs.db" in the
"All or part of a file name" text box (without the quotes)

You should see all your Thumbs files listed - select the lot then
delete them all.

If you have other hard disks, do the same with them all

You should now have NO thumb files on your system

Then right click on a problem folder and choose Customise then
"Restore Default" then "Also Apply this template to all Subfolders"

Repeat for other problem folders

Also have a look at this & see if it helps

As a last resort you could try a Repair Install which would retain
your application software, but I would doubt that would clear the
problem. A clean install should clear it but you would have to update
your system and install programs again - you would also lose data so
back it up first!.

Nice one, John.

Unchecking "Hide Protected Operating System Files" did the trick as the
search found even more "thumbs.db" files which I then deleted although I was
still unable to delete them all at the same time.

This has worked anyway. I will just have to rember not to customise folder
pictures in the future, although I might try "folder.jpg" pictures...

Any ideas on the 'greyed out' picture problem? This is not only affecting
pictures in Firefox, but also, icons in the system tray.

Thanks for your help.

I don't know - I assume that your display is set to more than 256
coiours. You could see if there is a newer driver available for your
graphics card
