XP PC won't see web

I'm trying to connect a home network with 3 PCs. Just to be difficult, they're all running different Windows versions - XP, 2000, and 98. I have a Gigafast router connected to my RoadRunner cable modem, and the 3 PCs are connected to the router. The PCs can all see each other (via ping, and via sharing resources), and the 2000 and 98 machines can see the web... but the XP machine will NOT see the internet... I've tried checking all the settings I can think of/find, but everything seems to be set right..

Also, the XP machine occasionally "disappears" from the view of the other 2 PCs (ping not able to find it)... I thought maybe McAfee was somehow restricting access, but disabling it didn't solve the problem

Help? Thanks!

Jim,

Is this a wired, or wireless, router?

McAfee firewall has been noted in the past as causing connectivity problems,
even when disabled. Try un installing it, carefully, using all un install
procedures.

Please provide ipconfig information for each computer.
Start - Run - "ipconfig /all >c:\ipconfig.txt" - Open c:\ipconfig.txt in
Notepad, copy and paste into your next post.

Cheers,
Chuck

It's a wired router. I've completely uninstalled McAfee from the XP machine, to no avail. The connection/visibility of the XP machine to the other 2 PCs seems to come-n-go at random... but it NEVER sees the web..

Here's the ipconfig data for all three PCs. Thanks again for any help

Jim,

Provide a bit of history please. Has Compaq-PC always had this problem? Have
you always had this network setup?

What brand and model router?

From Compaq-PC,
1) Ping www.yahoo.com.
2) Ping 66.94.230.33.
Report error messages.

When Compaq-PC "disappears" ("ping not able to find it"), are you pinging by
name or by ip address?

The next time Compaq-PC "disappears", from Compaq-PC, and from the computer from
which it disappeared:
1) Ping the other by name.
2) Ping the other by ip address.
3) Ping itself by name.
4) Ping itself by ip address.
5) Ping 127.0.0.1.
6) Ping 192.168.8.1 (router).
Report success / failure (error message) of each of the 12 pings.

Switch the cable and router port between Compaq-PC and another PC. Observe if
symptoms change.

Cheers,
Chuck

Chuck

Just installed the router - Compaq-PC was stand-alone before that. It connected directly to the cable modem and everything worked fine

The router is a GigaFast EE400-R

If I ping yahoo from the Compaq-PC, it eventually comes back with "Ping request could not find host..." If I ping 66.94.230.33, I get four "Request timed out." msgs

When the Compaq-PC "disappears", it's usually a momentary thing - either some sort of file sharing won't work (like trying to browse a shared folder, or print to a shared printer), but then a second or third try will work... Or, occasionally when I ping it from one of the other PCs, one or more of the 4 msgs will be "Request timed out"... sometimes 3 out of 4 of the tries will go through, but one will time out...

Right now, it won't "disappear", so I can't ping as you requested... but it sees 127.0.0.1 fine, it sees the other PCs, and it sees the router..

And I tried swapping router ports... no difference

???
Thanks.

Well, Jim, nothing obvious in the ipconfig listings. The PPP adapter on Parents
is kinda interesting though.

You swapped router ports. How about network cables?

Get Ping Plotter (free) from http://www.pingplotter.com/. Use it to
continuously ping Compaq-PC from tc1380118, and simultaneously ping tc1380118
from Compaq-PC. Look for those mysterious "disappearances", and see if they
correspond to any events obvious in the PP traces. Also ping the router from
Compaq-PC.

Do you have the latest (and are they XP compatible) Realtek drivers installed?
Does Realtek provide any diagnostics utility? How about Windows Device Manager
(Control Panel - System - Hardware - Device Manager - (Network Card Properties)
- Device Status / Troubleshoot) - any clues there?

Please provide static route tables for each computer.
Start - Run - "route print >c:\route.txt" - Open c:\route.txt in Notepad, copy
and paste into your next post.

I've swapped cables, too, to no avail

I'm running PingPlotter - Compaq-PC (the XP machine with the attitude) shows no problems pinging the router and/or the other two machines. Both other machines, though, show occasional glitches while pinging the XP machine..

I'm looking into the driver for the RealTek NIC

Here's the Route Print output for all 3 machines
