I can't get my two PCs to talk to each other. Following specs (hope they are
relevant).

Name: LBR1 GATEWAY
Workgroup: HOME HOME
TCP/IP: 192.168.1.1 192.168.1.2
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0 255.255.255.0

Also note the Win 98 SE PC has a 56 k modem and I would like to use that PC
as an internet "gateway" (I think that's the right word).

Yes, you can make one computer the Internet "gateway" for the other.
If possible, make the XP computer the gateway. XP's Internet sharing
program is much easier to set up and much more reliable than 98SE's
Internet sharing program.

To use XP as the gateway:

1. Configure XP as an Internet Connection Sharing host:

Windows XP Internet Connection Sharing
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/xp_ics/

2. Configure 98SE as an Internet Connection Sharing client:

XP ICS - Client Setup Using the Network Setup Wizard
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/xp_ics/clientwiz.htm

If you must use 98SE as the gateway:

1. Configure 98SE as an Internet Connection Sharing host:

ICS Installation [Win98SE]
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/ics/icsinstall.htm

2. Configure XP as an Internet Connection Sharing client:

XP ICS - Client Setup Using the Network Setup Wizard

http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/xp_ics/clientwiz.htm

3. Configure ZoneAlarm on 98SE with the Internet Zone Security set
to Med. and the Trusted Zone Security set to Low.

In both cases, the local area network will use IP addresses in the
192.168.0.x range. Make sure that ZoneAlarm has that range in the
Trusted Zone.

Thanks Steve,

I've made limited progress (i.e. not much). I can ping to 127.0.0.1 from
both pcs. I cannot ping either from the other. When pinging LBR1 (now
192.168.0.1) from GATEWAY, I get "request timed out". When pinging GATEWAY
(now 192.168.0.2) from LBR1 I get "Destination Host Unreachable".

Is it possible that the "Integrated 1394 Net Adapter" (is that firewire?) is
not compatible with the Ethernet NIC card? The former is at 400MBps. The
latter is anywhere up to 100 full duplex. The former's speed can't be
changed as far as I can tell, the latter can.

If this is a problem, what can I do about it?

BTW Unfortunately, for the time being I do have to use the W98 PC as the
Internet gateway.
