Possible incompatibility networking one PC to another (1394 vs 10/100 Ethernet).

G

GPO

I have:

A cat 5 crossover cable;

A PC with:
Name: GATEWAY
W98SE
a 10/100 Ethernet Card
IP:192.168.0.2
Internet access via dial-up 56kbps dial-up modem.

A PC with
Name: LBR1
WinXP
Integrated 1394 Net Adapter
IP 192.168.0.1

Both PCs ping successfully to 127.0.0.1. Neither can ping to the other. From
LBR1 to GATEWAY, I get "request timed out". From GATEWAY to LBR1 I get
"Destination Host Unreachable".

Is it possible that the "Integrated 1394 Net Adapter" (is that firewire?) is
not compatible with the Ethernet NIC card in a crossover setup? The former
is at 400MBps. The latter is anywhere up to 100 full duplex. The former's
speed can't be changed as far as I can tell, the latter can.

If this is a problem, what can I do about it? Is it possible to link the two
PCs together by replacing the 10/100 card with a PCI Firewire card? If I do
this, what will I need to do about the crossover cable? Will it still work?

Regards

Yes, 1394 is FireWire. I don't think it's possible to connect a CAT 5
crossover cable to a FireWire port, since FireWire uses a different
size and shape of connector than Ethernet does.

So, I suspect that the crossover cable is actually connected to an
Ethernet adapter on LBR1, and that you need to forget about the
FireWire connection and configure the local area network connection
that uses that Ethernet adapter.

Dear GPO
One way to fix this poblem could be using a router with
straight cable.
I hope it works

Yes 100% correct!.

The 10/100 adapter was disabled in the BIOS for some reason, and therefore
was not showing up as a network adapter. I assumed the firewire protocol was
somehow able to be used with an RJ45 cable. But all fixed now.
