1394 conflict with ethernet???? Help

I just built a new ASUS P4 computer based on the P4P800
Deluxe motherboard. It has a 3Com 970 ethernet card and a
VIA 1394 card built in. I installed XP from scratch and
all was well. I could connect to my home network and surf
the web through my router and cable modem.

Then I hooked up my external firewire DVD burner to the
1394 port. It worked without a hitch. but,....when I
unplugged it my ethernet card stopped working. The lights
on the card just blink rapidly and the hub blinks.....I
can;t aquire an IP address via DHCP and Windows assigns a
private ip of 169.xxx.xxx.xxx. I cannot get the computer
back on the network. The kicker is that when I plug the
firewire DVD burner back into the 1394 port, the ethernet
card starts to work. An ipconfig /renew command and it is
back on the network with no flashing lights or problems.

I have been searching all of the sites, MS, VIA, ASUS and
3com and no answers.

In addition the firewire drive itself doesn't even need to
be turned on. As long as the 1394 cable is plugged into
the back of the firewire case the computer works. The
chipset inside of the burner is the OXford 911 chip. IF
that helps.

Someone please direct me to an answer here. Surely this
1394 and ethernet card can work together.....especially
since htey are integrated in the same motherboard.

Thanks.

Open the Network Connections folder. If the Ethernet and 1394
connections are bridged, delete the network bridge.
