XP on two partitions of same drive

My home edition crashed, apparently a corrupted keyboard file. OEM support couldn't figure it out, and we got down to re-installation. They didn't ask, and I didn't offer, that I have two partions on the drive. When I began the reinstall, I inadvertently did so in the partition which previously was not the boot partion. Well, it has created a messy situation. I suppose that I am going to have to format at least one of those partions, and maybe both, and reinstall again. CAn anyone explain to a non-nerd why this configuration is not a happy one for XP? Just curious.
Thanks in advance.

You should probably remove the second installation and then do a repair
install on the original. Use the links below.
