I upgraded to XP from 98. Bought my daughter a used computer that is now
needing to be repaired. Receive a STOP ERROR but files are not damaged. I
just don't have the DISC from her computer. Can I use my XP disc and install
it on her computer?

If both computers are running the same Edition and Version of Windows
XP then you can use *your* CD and *her* Product Key to reinstall XP on
her computer.

Edition = Home, Professional, Media Center, or Tablet PC
Version = Retail Upgrade, OEM, Volume License, Academic, Retail Full
Install, etc.

Note regarding OEM versions: The reinstall as above will only work if
neither computer has a "BIOS Locked" (= SLP) OEM version that does not
require activation.

What is the content of the STOP error message that she is getting?
There may be a less drastic solution than reinstalling.

Good luck

You need to purchase a separate WinXP license for each computer on
which you install it. (As long as you have multiple identical licenses,
it doesn't matter if you use the same CD for the installations, as long
as you use a different license each time.)

Just as it has *always* been with *all* Microsoft operating
systems, it's necessary (to be in compliance with both the EULA and U.S.
copyright law http://www4.law.cornell.edu/uscode/17/117.html), if not
technically) to purchase one WinXP license for each computer on which it
is installed. (Consult an attorney versed in copyright law to determine
final applicability in your locale.) The only way in which WinXP
licensing differs from that of earlier versions of Windows is that
Microsoft has finally added a copy protection and anti-theft mechanism,
Product Activation, to prevent (or at least make more difficult)
multiple installations using a single license.

One can buy additional licenses, assuming one already has a retail
license. Naturally, Microsoft cannot sell additional OEM licenses. Be
aware, however, that you'll probably pay more this way than you would if
you were to buy a second copy of WinXP from a discount retailer;
Microsoft will only offer you a 15% discount off their MSRP.

Thanks Ron, here is the whole stop error message. 0x000000ED, 0X82793030,
0Xc0000006, 0x000000000 and 0x00000000 Unmountable Boot Volume. When I
bought her the computer I did not receive the CD to reboot, it's a Dell
Dimension 8200, I believe that XP came on the system when originally bought.
It has an Intel Pentium processor.

When you talk about BIOS being locked, I'm lost. When we attempt to restart
using the F8 key we get an error message about the keyboard not responding
too, then it goes to the Stop Error message.

Thanks for the info and maybe with this additional information I just sent
you can help a little more.

The "Unmountable Boot Volume" error may be fixable by running CHKDSK
from the Windows XP Recovery console.

Boot the computer with a Windows XP Installation CD and choose the
"Repair (Recovery Console)" option.

When the computer has finished booting and has stopped at the Command
Prompt (D:\> or similar) then enter the following command:

CHKDSK C: /R

This may take some time to process, and may not fix the problem. But
it is worth trying before we proceed to more "drastic" steps.

Good luck
