2 PART QUESTION
(just realized large cap was on half way into posting)

#1... i HAVE A COMPAQ COMPUTER WITH XP HOME. The restore discs have a ton
of extra software that i'm not wanting. OK... i have a dell install disc
with xp pro. Can i use the coa from the xp home edition?

#2.... If the coa from a xp home edition won't work, can a coa from another
xp pro computer work?

A common problem, that of 'adulterated' copies of Windows being supplied.
IMHO the practice chould be prohibited. (Thinking about it, if I sold you a
bottle of vodka which contained a 'free trial' of water, I'd have Trading
Standards at my door pretty soon.)

A Home COA will not work with Pro. If you can beg or borrow a genuine Home
CD (preferably of the same SP level) you should be able to reinstall with
your own COA.

If you use another Pro COA you will have problems activating unless that COA
has not been activated recently. Plus you are exceeding your licence terms.

coa = certificate of authenticity
key is what is on the PC case and is tied to the version of win that was
preinstalled & supplied by that maker
1) no
2) no (You would require a retail version of win, with its key, or could try
a generic oem home version with the compaq key)

Never happen. (Not that I adisagree with the sentiment, mind you.)

Sadly, that's not really the case, at all. Just try finding a bottle
of real, vodka-flavoured vodka, these days. It's all the rage to have
citrus, blackberry, huckleberry, or what-have-you-flavoured vodka. The
distillers market these flavoured adulterations as "enhancements," just
as the PC manufacturers claim their software additions have an added
value for the consumer. And as long as the consumers sheepishly accept
this practice, it'll continue.
