XP OEM

I am trying to re-install windows XP and clear everything
off my PC as I have had a few randon lock-ups, various
probs, etc., and just want a clean sheet, however the
company I bought my PC from, with XP pre-installed, want
to charge my £60 sterling for a disk to do this. I
believe that XP is held on a hidden partition of the hard
drive, however this disk is needed to access it. The
company is Time Computers in the UK, and it is their
System Reload CD they want to sell me. Is there a way
around this. Surely I paid for Windows XP once, and
should be able to re-install it whenever I want?

I believe that in the Microsoft OEM aggreement, the manufacturer must
provifr you with a method of re-loading pre-installed OSes. If you think
that XP is on your system, they should provide you access.

However, I think that Time is charging you for the CD only.

All technical support for preinstalled versions of Windows XP
is the responsibility of the manufacturer of the computer. In
your case, you'll have to deal directly with Time Computers.

It is my understanding that the OEM is required (by Microsoft) to
provide you with either a restore CD or an original XP CD.

Started a reply to you. It turned into a rant . When it started sounding
like Charles Manson I deleted everything.
I too have an OEM XP . Didn't know that until I came here a few weeks ago
and learned that what I have is inferior to what I thought I paid "retail"
for. If anyone believes that nothing can be done about it , they have
forgotten their history lessons. Revolutions started over much less. A
simple tax on tea for instance ,or when that silly woman said " Let them eat
cake " .

I say ,SOMEBODY GET A ROPE !

There is no secret that manufacturers buy software and
operating systems from Microsoft at large discounts, often
modify the software and OS to some degree, and are
responsible then for all support for that OEM software. One
reason you can buy a new Dell for less than $500 is that the
version of Windows installed did not cost $300.

The mfg'r selects some means to do a repair or re-install of
the OS and applications supplied originally. That can be
the way Dell does (I've heard Gareway too), with a series of
CDs or the way HP/Compaq or eMachine does with either a
"restore" CD (older systems) or a hidden partition on the
hard drive. Whatever they do is in their manuals and you
the buyer needs to ask the questions.

Since the OP talked about £ they must be in GB or one of the
colonies. So Revolution is out, you gave up your arms and
gonads looking for safety from criminals.

i am afraid that you are in no luck. if you buy an oem

version of XP especially from TIME (cowboys) you are
intitiled to install it once and that is it. this is
because they buy it from microsoft with one disk and
hundreds of cd keys. just get yourself a copy, mate or
get a disk from a mate, pop in xp and select boot from cd
when asked. this will be afew secs after starup. it will
ask you if you want to recover a previous version of
windows or safe mode, click the option and press return
not enter return. thsi shoul work. if not re-install xp,
install all drivers again for everything including
motherboard, graphics card etc. then do a system restore
and create a boot disk.
